Hi Team,
The above picture is of Gail Platt from Coronation Street a limited edition print painted by Joe Lycett. It’s my favourite art purchase this year!
Superstar Bryony Kimmings and I have been re-writing Head Set ready for its Autumn tour. But Vic why would you re-write a show you already know off by heart, that sold out in Edinburgh and got 4-star reviews, why would you mess with something that works and give yourself more work? Are you mad?
There’re a few reasons why it’s important to keep evolving your work. My theatre shows and stand-up are autobiographical and sometimes… life changes. I’m not the same person as I was when I was performing this show in Edinburgh last year. Some major changes have occurred. Performing the old script would feel too much like lying. Of course, art can be fiction and I definitely embellish and play with chronological order in my work. But my story has changed so majorly that it would be disingenuous to not honour that. Also, I want to make better art, to keep chipping away and learning my craft, perfecting and honing.
Another reason to change it up is the opportunity to work with new people. See what they can they bring to the table. Bryony makes incredible work and is mega successful. As we are both mouthy (and stunning) bold, performance artists that make autobiographical work we have been compared to each other in the past. I remember one newspaper review that openly pitted the 2 of us against one another. That kind of behaviour can create nemesis’s think Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, Lily Allen and Kate Nash. This doesn’t happen with men Daniel Kitson doesn’t get compared to Rob Auton, Mark Thomas to Nish Kumar. It is excuse my French – BOLLOCKS or des conneries. Something exciting happens when you work with your supposed “nemesis’s”. Mine and Bryony’s brains fizzed, both our ADHD neurons firing, our imaginations and her strong story structure logic and BANG our brains converge and we make something more beautiful than we could have made by ourselves. Head Set (once I’ve learnt the lines, urgh…help!) is so so so so much better now! My advice is, if you get the chance work with your nemesis’s hero’s.
Here’s a little cheeky DIY trailer I made
Head Set is going on a massive tour and I’d love to see you there. Please tell your friends and fam! It would be lovely to get lots of bums on seats. This will be the only time it tours in the UK.
Guardian Article
I forgot to tell you. The Guardian wrote about my work in this great article about death and theatre. We are at the end.
Sorry dad for calling you a “chain-smoking, angry, depressed man who played Football Manager all day!” Love you dad!
