Hi Team
Welcome to my new look newsletter. I’ve taken a few months off to recover from the re-enactment we staged for Brighton Festival, enjoy a holiday in Transylvania, sell my home, and spend some time writing the synopsis for my upcoming show in 2025.
Re-enactment
The Re-enactment was a dream. It was freak good weather. We were re-enacting the scene in 1649 where the Diggers were peacefully protesting against food poverty and land rights by growing vegetables on common land. Then the angry landowners come along with the army to kick them off the land. This incredible thing happened in the live event where The Diggers (played by locals and community aid volunteers) were all meant to down tools and flee when the army (played by 17th century re-enactors) drew their swords to arrest people. But in the moment The Diggers seemed to embody the unfairness, passion and anguish and there was this collective feeling that “no this is our land – you’re not taking it” so they stood their ground and refused to leave. One of the soldier re-enactors whispered into my ear “they’re not leaving, it’s not historically correct, what do we do?” I said “they’ve decided to make a stand and there’s nothing we can do about it.” I loved it. We might not be able to re-write history but we can shape our future.
Transylvania
I also took a trip to Transylvania, just a 2.5-hour flight away. The region is as culturally diverse and steeped in history and folk art and nature as somewhere in South America. The biodiversity is incredible due to minimal pesticide use, there’s trees everywhere and we saw bears in the wild. We didn’t see another Brit in 10 days and the Romanian’s were incredible hosts.

Bored?
Lastly, I’m looking for new board members! Our board is a fun and informal group that meets a few times a year for dinner and discussions about art projects and future plans. We already have a couple of theatre folks, so we’re looking for people from other fields, especially those with business acumen in marketing and fundraising. If you’re curious email me, I’d love to chat more!
