I went to Berlin and took a photo that looks like I fell down the Alice in Wonderland tunnel. And it’s day 3! It’s making the main. I think this is might be my favourite city

YOUTH is taking over Swaffham. The name was chosen by the young people involved and stands for Your Opportunity Unified Together Here.On Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd October, we’re taking over Pedlar’s Car Park with different spaces and activities shaped by what young people in Swaffham have told us they want. There’ll be Beats & Eats for food and music, The Makers Den for making and creative workshops, a Swap Shop for clothes, a Chill Out space, DJs and live music, graffiti, gym sessions, wellbeing support and The Post Box, where young people can share their ideas for what they’d like to see in Swaffham. The project started because young people told us there wasn’t enough for them to do in the town. The takeover is a chance to test some of their ideas, bring young people together and show the people who make decisions in Swaffham what they actually want. The project is happening through Norfolk & Norwich Festival and Breckland Council, with loads of help and support from people, organisations and businesses across the Swaffham community.Bring your clean, still wearable clothes and swap them for a token.Friday 2 October, 4–9pmSaturday 3 October, 11am–3pmPedlar’s Car Park, Swaffham@swaffhamtowncouncil@hyletefit@nnfest@breckcouncil@besideyouthcic@newupreloved@sdna.tv@creanorfolk@cwa_college#YOUTHSwaffham #Swaffham #YouthTakeover #NorfolkYouth #YoungPeople

I’ve loved working on this project with the kids and the community of Shildon. And I don’t think it’s the end…Today was the 25th anniversary of Jubilee Fields Community Centre. They’ve fought hard and tirelessly over the last 25 years to keep the doors open. The community have fundraised for themselves, and the turnout today, throughout the building, was incredible. The moment you walk through the doors, it feels like a home from home.Shildon has had its mines closed, its railway works closed, and thousands and thousands of jobs lost. And yet, in the words of Sam, the Mayor: “People in Shildon are just smashing, they’ve got their priorities right.”These kids are great and this community is great. It’s honestly been an honour.Thank you to Jubilee Fields for hosting us, and to the fab audience who came in from the sunshine to watch our screening today. Thanks to PLACE Lab and Northern Heartlands for making this project possible, and thanks to everyone in Shildon who has welcomed us, shared their stories and got involved.Heard Not Hushed. ❤️#HeardNotHushed #Shildon #JubileeFields #NorthernHeartlands #PLACELab @jubilee_fields_cc @nheartlands @sew.remembered

We did our first full run throughs today. Only 2 days to go until show time but the amount we’ve done in such a short time is incredible. Also the community have pulled together to let us interview them and make our set. The support has been ace. I hope we fill the whole place full of audience for the kids and that they get a massive standing ovation because they deserve it. #heardnothushed @thestuteshildon @nheartlands

Meet the self-titled “Heard Not Hushed Collective”.I’m absolutely buzzing after running another workshop with this brilliant crew. As Artist in Residence in Shildon, working with PLACE Lab and Northern Heartlands @nheartlands , We’ve spent the day exploring collective action, storytelling and what kind of future young people want to build.Next month we’re heading to the Durham Miners’ Gala, where we’ll be running a stall around this year’s theme: “The Past We Inherit, The Future We Build.” We’ll be interviewing people, collecting soundscapes, talking to other young people and creating a Youth Charter.Back in Shildon, we’re interviewing local adults, particularly those connected to the railway works, the mines and the old fur factory. We want to collect stories, memories and lived experiences. Those stories tell us about the past we inherit. The charter, collective and ideas we’ve created today are about the future we build.Over the next few months we’ll bring those two things together to create a new performance, which will be staged at the world’s oldest railway institute in Shildon on 8 August. These young people are going to change the world. Maybe not all of it, but definitely a bit of it.And they’re every bit as hyper about that possibility as I am.

First carrots of the year!OK, I managed to pull out the smallest carrot ever, but it still counts. Our Whitehawk community garden is in full bloom thanks to Adam, our brilliant gardener, and the children who come every single week to help grow, water, dig and explore.I’m also delighted to say we’ve just been funded for another year by the council’s EDB Fund.Everyone loves this garden, but especially the children. Here they’re allowed to be themselves, run around, get muddy, grow food and spend time outdoors. In an area where around 50% of children are living in poverty, having a free, welcoming space like this really matters. It’s more than a garden. It’s somewhere to belong, learn new skills, build confidence and connect with nature and each other.Thank you to everyone who has helped make it happen @crew_club @gurt_plants

I’m back doing my artist residency in Swaffham for @nnfest Swaffham’s young people have come through. We’ve done a lot of listening over the last few months and especially the last 3 days and now I’m properly fired up. I think the young people here are too.Again and again, I’m hearing that kids are bored, there’s not enough for them to do, and they often feel told off just for hanging out and being young. So what happens when young people actually feel listened to by adults? Let’s find out.I’ll be back in Swaffham June 12th–14th, with a workshop on Sunday 14th June, 12–2pm at the Community Centre for ages 10+.Come make something playful, creative and loud with us @faithdodkins #Swaffham#YouthVoice#CreativeActivism#NorfolkYouth#CommunityArts
