Hi Team,

I got rejected by the Arts Council to finish making my show Head Set and to take it on a preview tour. Although nobody is entitled to grant funding, I was gutted. I’ve been making Head Set since 2017. We worked so, so hard on that application and it was strong. I talked about this rejection on social media as it’s important to share the lows as well as the highs. I was bowled over by the outpouring of love and support. Dad even phoned up and offered to give me some cash (I said no, I’m a 100 years old!). It’s interesting though because I had people that I consider to be hugely successful tell me the same had happened to them. From the outside you never really know what’s going on.

It’s like dominoes if we don’t make the show, the preview tour falls apart, if we don’t do the previews then Edinburgh doesn’t happen. Well the incredible news is that my producers and I have scraped enough money together to get Head Set over the finishing line. It’s not the full amount but everyone will be paid properly and I won’t let the art suffer. So you have to come and see me now!

I am so incredibly proud of this show. It’s probably my best. Performing stand-up 5 nights a week in dingy basements to audiences who don’t know (or care) who I am has REALLY improved my performance skills.
